MARY PORTAS OPENS TWENTY SECOND LIVING & GIVING SHOP ON STOKE NEWINGTON’S CHURCH STREET

Following growing success, Mary Portas opened the twenty second Living & Giving Shop for Save the Childrenin Stoke Newington on Saturday 20th May. The new shop, located on popular Church Street, is now open to the public and jam-packed with must-have pieces kindly donated by luxury brands and retailers, including the likes of Alexander McQueen, Philip Lim, Derek Lam, Rag & Bone, Meadham Kirchoff and Frame denim.

Based on the philosophy that fashion can save lives and shopping can be guilt free, Mary’s Living & Giving Shops for Save the Children offer a boutique shopping experience with the community at its core. Since the first shop opened in 2009 they have raised nearly £11million which has given children around the world a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm.

London artist Tom Jones-Berney collaborated with the Mary’s Living & Giving team, to create a store design that reflects the area’s eclectic art and culture scene, witha snapshot of ‘London Life’ and in particular, the community vibe of Stoke Newington. Tom is the founder of Tomartacus, an East London design studio which produces digital prints that bring iconic London views to life in a characteristically “drunken” style. Local graffiti artist James Titchner also lent a hand by handpainting the shutter.

All profits from sales in store go directly to Save the Children who help the world’s most vulnerable children and their families. With the ongoing crisis’ in Syria and Yemen, and the current famine in East Africa, it’s more important than ever before continue to make sure children are safe, protected and healthy, wherever they are in the world.

Mary Portas says: “I am thrilled to announce the opening of the newest addition to the Living & Giving shops. Stoke Newington is a fabulous location and the sense of community here on Church Street is incredible. It’s like being in a little village in the middle of London. We are so looking forward to getting to know our neighbours and settling into this unique London space that captures the infamous N16 feel.

“As with all the other shops, we are really hoping that the new shop will become a unique community hub full of pre-loved gems for the residents of Stoke Newington. If it receives the same amount of generous love and support that our other twenty-one Living & Giving shops have had so far, I will be so happy.

Save the Children is also appealing for donations from residents, fashion houses and local artisans, as well as for local volunteers to work in the shop to help it to become a success. To donate stock or to enquire about volunteering visit http://www.savethechildren.org.uk/get-involved/charity-shopping/marys-living-and-giving or call 02089483783.
