This year, Severn Hospice not only won the sector’s prestigious Outstanding Charity Retailer of the year 2018, it opened a 6,000ft superstore – the biggest charity shop in Shropshire.

The Shrewsbury based store is the 26th community shop run by the charity and is powered by more than 30 volunteers aged from 16 – 77 years old. Since it launched on 13 September has sold over £60,000 worth of goods, equivalent to 2,400 hours of care for families living with incurable illness across Shropshire and Mid Wales.

This could not have been done without volunteers and local residents who joined forces to help Severn Hospice’s superstore come to fruition, donating thousands of items of stock and hundreds of hours of time.

Severn Hospice superstore manager, Rebecca Woolliscroft, said: “The community support galvanised by the venture has been the best thing. We have brilliant volunteers helping us and there is so much variety, from the people you work with and meet, to the types of donations we receive. I love working at the superstore, it is a great project and I’m really looking forward to working even more closely with the community in the future.”

The hospice’s retail arm has 840 volunteers in their shops and raises more than £1 million a year towards vital services. Yet as community shops, the aim is for them to not only be a place to shop but to be a space where people can meet, chat and engage with the charity’s work.

Severn Hospice Head of Retail, Ross   Henderson, said: “We are extremely grateful for the efforts of the Shrewsbury community who helped our superstore dream become a reality – this is what our community shops are all about. As we expand our shops and raise more funds, we will be able to care for even more people at home and support families to live as well as they can with incurable illnesses. Thank you to everyone who makes this possible.”
