As well as an extensive and varied book collection the new store also offers Vinyl, and a selection of Gifts and Cards, plus a Book Repair service and other interesting book-reading related initiatives.

The store delivers a very pleasurable browsing experience in a well designed and eco-friendly space, along with enthusiastic and knowledgable staff and volunteers.

A NEW BEGINNING FOR CHAPTER TWO

Finally, after a delayed three-month wait (all good things come to those who wait!), Chapter Two, Chesham’s new community pre-loved bookshop opened at 10 High Street (near the clock tower) on Monday 29th June 2020.

The pre-loved bookshop, where all profits go towards the care provided at The Hospice of St Francis, is beautifully designed and offers book lovers a real treat. It has sustainability at its heart, giving new life to once-cherished books and reusing materials inside the shop from donated bookcases and shelving to recycled materials on the counter.

There are designated fiction, crime, architecture, travel, cookery and gardening sections with a vintage area devoted to colourful Penguin Originals alongside a dedicated children’s corner with classics, fascinating fact books and stories for all ages. The shop also sells vinyl and a selection of carefully chosen gifts and cards.

The shop team is adhering to government guidelines after the pandemic. Hand and social distancing will be in place and staff will be wearing PPE in the form of visors and gloves. Card payments are preferable but the shop will continue to take cash if requested.

Mark Jackson-Hancock, manager of Chapter Two, commented, “Books don’t age and our eclectic collection of treasured books is ready and waiting to inspire, delight, educate and amuse the people of Chesham and beyond.

“I’m sure lots of people will have rediscovered reading during Lockdown and we have lots of books here to fuel individual passions further. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have a particular book request and we’ll keep our eyes peeled for you.

“We may have been delayed but are delighted to be opening our doors to local people and carrying on the tradition of having an independent bookshop in the heart of Chesham and following in the footsteps of Chapter One, run by Liz Payne, which served the town for over two decades.”

Whilst the Bookshop’s plans for workshops have been put on hold for the time being, the team is holding virtual book clubs, creative writing workshops, and children’s storytimes initially read by owners of other small local independent shops. More details about dates and times can be found at www.stfrancis.org.uk/chaptertwo or via Chapter Two’s Facebook page. The charity bookshop is also offering a book repair service and selected books are also available to buy online through Chapter Two’s Abe Books page.

Chapter Two is on the lookout for more volunteers to help on the shop floor and sort donations and particularly welcomes applications from BAME backgrounds. Full training and PPE will be provided. Find out more by visiting www.stfrancis.org.uk/volunteer.

Donations, especially children’s books, are also gratefully received although due to new safety guidelines, the shop team has asked that only two carrier bags or one box of books are bought in during opening hours (Mon-Sat 10-4 pm). All donations will be quarantined for three days before appearing on the shop floor.
